Unsanctioned AI use creates new corporate security blind spots

Employees are increasingly turning to public artificial intelligence tools to boost productivity, but in doing so, are creating a significant and often invisible security risk known as “Shadow AI.” This phenomenon occurs when staff use AI services like ChatGPT or Gemini for work-related tasks without official approval, operating outside the view and control of IT and security departments.

The primary danger is unintentional data exfiltration. When employees input sensitive information—such as proprietary source code, confidential client data, financial reports, or strategic plans—into public AI models, that data leaves the organization's secure environment. Depending on the AI service's terms, this information could be used to train future models, potentially exposing it to other users or storing it indefinitely on third-party servers.

This practice creates severe risks, including the irreversible loss of intellectual property and potential violations of data privacy regulations like GDPR and HIPAA. Unlike traditional “Shadow IT,” where employees might use an unapproved cloud storage service, Shadow AI involves tools specifically designed to process and learn from the data they receive, magnifying the potential for leakage.

The scale of the issue is considerable. Security teams struggle to track the use of these browser-based tools, which often bypass conventional network security controls. This lack of oversight means sensitive information can exit the corporate perimeter without alerts, bypassing traditional security measures designed to protect data in transit, such as a VPN or Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems.

In response, organizations are beginning to establish clear acceptable use policies for AI and are deploying specialized tools to discover and control the use of unsanctioned AI applications. The goal is not to block innovation but to guide employees toward using AI in a secure and compliant manner, preventing productivity gains from turning into costly data breaches.
